Step 4: the makeup
This seems to be the largest problem area when it comes to these events. No-one really knows anything about makeup and so everyone ends up looking rather strange. Most people get makeup artists to do their makeup for them but personally, I think some of the makeup artists in South Africa don’t really know how to make you look like a better version of yourself – they end up making you look much older than you are.
Mac cosmetics is a safe option to have your makeup done at but always go for a test run first and see how the makeup photographs and then decide. My friend went to Mac for her Matric Formal makeup and she says she had a really good experience. They were professional and met her expectations and more – her makeup even stayed on all night. She had the best makeup artist in the store do her makeup based on her explanations and Pinterest images. All you need to do is buy R500,00 worth of products to have them do your makeup – which is a very good deal. The best is to book an appointment for the day of your formal.
I personally did my own makeup as I was confident I would be able to construct the look I wanted and so I bought all the products I needed. Another option is to buy all the products you want to use and then get someone else to do your makeup – this is preferred as then you have control over the quality of the products you are going to have on your face which affects the end result largely – the only downside is that this option can be very expensive.
If you have the money to buy luxury makeup products then this is a great way to invest in products you can keep for a lifetime. I’d recommend these products if you choose to buy luxury products:
Soleil Tan De Chanel is the most naturally beautiful cream bronzer you’ll find
Chanel’s Natural Finish Loose Powder is skinlike without looking cakey
Urban Decay’s All Nighter setting spray is a quality setting spray that will let your makeup stay all night
Urban Decay’s Naked Skin concealer is one of the best natural cake-free concealers you’ll find
Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner is one of the smoothest you’ll find at the drugstore
Mac’s Strobe Cream in Goldlite will give your skin a stunning natural glow and can be mixed into or applied under or on top of your foundation
Mac’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is an excellent natural highlighter
Nyx’s Angel Veil Primer is great for oil control
Body makeup is also a must for special events. You need to be moisturized – Nivea Rich Nourishing body lotion or Body Shop’s Coconut Nourishing Body Butter gives your skin a natural shine. Highlighter can be placed on the shoulders, chest and collar bones to give you a stunning glow in photos. A liquid highlighter can be mixed with your body lotion or just applied to your skin, like Mac’s Strobe Cream, for extra shine. The Body Shop’s Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil is also a lovely product: it gives you a bronze glow without needing to tan.
